The School for Patients for the Prevention of Breast Cancer began its work in the Pirogov Center.

Breast cancer is the most common oncological disease among women. Annually doctors diagnose up to 50 000 new cases of this pathology in the Russian Federation. Breast cancer ranks second in terms of mortality in cancer patients among women. Breast cancer has a rather favorable prognosis with its early detection and rational treatment.

The main methods of diagnosing the disease are medical examination, mammography, breast ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging. Mammography is the only screening method that has proven its absolute effectiveness. According to WHO, due to mammography, for 50 years, the death rate from breast cancer among women in high-income countries, where the screening coverage exceeds 70%, has decreased by 20-30% (IARC, 2008).

In order to give patients modern knowledge about the methods of diagnosis, prevention, risk factors, treatment methods, to answer all the questions of interest, we will organize the School for Patients for the Prevention of Breast Cancer.

The lesson is planned on the basis of CDC “Izmaylovskiy” of National Pirogov Medical Surgical Center.

The topic of the lesson: “Risk factors for breast cancer. What is Breast Cancer Screening? Interpretation of screening findings, what should I look for? Prevention of breast cancer. Possibilities of National Pirogov Medical Surgical Center in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.”

Yakovleva Natalia Mikhailovna, chief of the surgical department, an oncologist-mammologist, leads the School.
